Welp, Cya Later NZ!

January 7, 2011

Today was our last day in Auckland/New Zealand (well minus the early trip to the airport in the morning!). We have to wake up at 4a.m. to catch out flight to Sydney then from Sydney to LAX – wahh wah! Now talk about waking the dead! Sheesh.

Yesterday was spent traveling ALL DAY from Wellington to Auckland. And I think it was our bus drivers first time doing the route – special. We got dropped off at a different station than I routed so we spent forever walking around the downtown with our (ok my) huge ass packs on and finally got here. I managed to get shit on by a bird, have a bus driver get mad at us, and loose my North Face zippie (I’m really bummed about that!!!). We did have a bomb dinner at the Dominon which is a cute little local bar with bomb.com BBQ chicken pizza and some delish beer.

We spent the day roaming the remaining major parts of Auckland we didn’t see on the first time around. We are staying this time in the Mt. Eden area which is a cute neighborhood up on the hill above Auckland proper. It’s a super cute/huge house in a tree-lined neighborhood.  We slept in then traveled down the road to a Crystal shop I found online that happened to be in our hood – nothing really caught my interest but it was a different shop (as Ryan said “I could have told you it was weird”).

We waited 10 years for a bus that we thought was headed in the direction of the Auckland Museum and got on and got off at a stop we thought looked right. Well, after strolling around for a little, we asked two nice women in a linen store how to find it and made our way there (of course on the way out we discovered a route that was prob a good 20 minutes shorter than the way there – oh well!).

The museum was pretty cool, not as big as Te Paupa, but had 3 floors of natural history, cultural history and war history. They had some huge waka’s (Maori boats) and a kind of scary volcano section. Get me outta here before this place blows up! The entire third floor of war history we were saying “oh Dad would love this” – even though he’s probably saying right now, “pfft, New Zealand doesn’t even have an Army!” or something diminishing any army they do have. We walked around the Parnell/Newmarket area where there is a huge Westfield mall- go figure and found our way back up to the Mt. Eden neighborhood. A little rest now, some dinner, then an early bedtime and we are off!

It’s been a great trip and we’ve really enjoyed the Kiwi’s! My favorite places have been the smaller more bohemian towns that have a surfer-ish vibe. We are already thinking of our next trip (but let’s get serious – I need some serious deep cleaning and a nice rest in my own bed before this happens!).

See you soon USA!

Yep NZ does have an army and they fought bravely in North Africa among other places in WW2. So, HA! I know about that part…
