Wellington!

January 5, 2011

We’ve spent the last two days in Wellington, NZ’s capital. Yesterday we hit up the Te Papa Museum which was humongous and we spent 3 hours traipsing around the displays learning more about NZ culture than we dreamed of. They had some awesome Greenstone (which is a Jade) displays. Greenstone is my new obsession and I scored a sweet one earlier in the trip. Everyone wears them and they come in different shapes with different meanings.

Afterwards we travelled around the Courtney Pl and Cube street shopping districts, enjoying a BOMB woodfired pizza and looking for books to read since we finished the ones we brought. Can you believe that books are around $30 NZD?? $22 bucks for a paperback book. I don’t think so, scooter!

Today we took the “cable car” up to the Botanical Gardens, packed some homemade pesto-chicken chibatta sandwiches and strolled around the beautiful gardens. The cable car is a mix of a gondola and a SF cable car that takes all of 5 minutes to get to the top. Later we found a used bookstore our Finish friend told us about and scored 2 books for $25 NZD – cheaper than the price of one at Borders! Wellington is very cityish and easy to walk around, so we’d seen most of the sights so we spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out in comfy chairs at a Starbucks reading out books (nerd alert!). Plus is started raining so tramping around would be wet!

OMG – and I forgot one of the best parts! When walking through this random “arcade” or mall – we stumbled upon a gemstone/crystal dispenser. Just like a candy machine, you put in $2 NZD and out comes a crystal. When I did it, two popped out! Carnelian and Amazonite! SO COOL!!

Tomorrow we get up early and head back to Auckland via an Intercity Bus. The trip should take pretty much all day. Then it’s one more day in Auckland and home. It’s hard to believe two weeks is almost up, but most of the people we’ve met along the way are traveling for months – crazy!

p.s. here is a little preview of our Maori outfits that a friend posted on Facebook…HAHA
