Just 5 More Minutes…

January 3, 2011

OMG. What day! An early wake up call and we were out to the Tongariro National Park to do the Tongariro Mountain Crossing. Never tell an American 19.4km because she won’t think it’s that bad. Wrong. SUCH A LONG ASS HIKE!

First, a flat map does not clearly depict the incline and amount of rough terrain climbing necessary to finish. Second, yours truly did not bring enough water so she was giving it to herself as a prize to making it to the next cliff or rock ledge. Third, I thought to myself this morning “oh hey, national park – that means lots of forests, trees.” Wrong again. Try a volcanic mountain we were climbing!

Well needless to say, we made the trip in 6 hrs and 35 minutes (it normally takes 7-8). Ry did it in about 5 hrs, 45 minutes! Crazy Man. And my 11-year-old friend from England, Katy, made it in 7.5 hrs! Of course the only time I seriously fell was 20 minutes to the end of the course on the easiest part of the trail and I ate shit and tore up my knee a little bit (surprise, surprise!). There were some awesome sulfur lakes and the red crater was awesome to look at! It was very rewarding to complete the strenuous climb, especially when the tour company handed us a beer as we boarded the bus at the end! That’s what I’m talking about!

Let me just say,I’ve never enjoyed a shower more in my life. So. Dirty. BTW – our hostel here is like a ski/Yosemite resort – so nice! Check it out here. They made a MEAN bacon cheeseburger too!

Tomorrow we head out to Wellington, the capital of NZ and end our journey on the Stray bus. We’ve made loads of friends and will be sad to see them off but we still have a couple of days to explore Wellington and Auckland again.
